A second-half finish proved to be the difference as Phoenix boys soccer edged Klamath Union 2-1 in a 4A-5 Skyline Conference league match Thursday evening in Phoenix, Oregon. The narrow victory pushed the Firebirds to 5-2-4 overall and 5-2 in conference play, keeping them firmly in the mix as the regular season winds toward its close. Phoenix entered the match at 4-2-4 and needed a result to maintain their standing in the Skyline race. They got one, though Klamath Union made it uncomfortable until the final whistle. The Firebirds found the net twice and did just enough defensively to protect the slim margin, handing the Pelicans a tough road loss. With league games remaining, Phoenix will look to build on this momentum and secure the best possible seeding heading into the postseason. Their next test will reveal how much this result means for the stretch run.
